The store aims to address the worryingly high usage of single-use plastic in South Africa. It is irresponsible and environmentally damaging to use plastic, as it stays on earth for centuries and causes havoc on the environment. SEK sells a wide range of dry foods such as nuts, seeds, grains and dry fruit on a weigh and pay basis, cutting out all plastic packaging There is also a with liquid products such as detergent, household cleaners, shampoo and conditioner. Customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable containers, which they can fill up with as much as they require each product. The selected goods are then paid for based on weight, with the weight of the container being deducted before calculating the price. The store also stocks a selection of eco-friendly container options should customers not have their own on-hand.
In the deli section, the eco-worrier will find delicious foods such as organic fresh produce, fresh milk in glass bottles (that can be returned for re-use), home-made nut butters and vegan cheeses and spreads – all plastic free! Naturally a range of goods to help people live a greener, lower impact lifestyle can also be found instore; collapsible coffee cups, re-usable straws, beeswax and soy wax food wraps, water purifiers, natural fibre brushes, beautiful re-usable gift wrapping, snacksbags, and tea infusers.
